A short public-school week: closed Wednesday, early dismissal for middle schools Thursday
NYC public schools are closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day, per the Education Department's calendar. On Thursday, Nov. 12, public middle schools and District 75 schools hold afternoon and evening parent-teacher conferences, and students in those schools are dismissed three hours early. Corrections
A correction from Saturday's edition
An early version of Saturday's history corner said the Yorkville delegation behind St. Joseph's 1873 founding went to "the Jesuits of St. Ignatius." At the time, that Jesuit parish was called St. Lawrence O'Toole. It was later renamed St. Ignatius Loyola. The corner was then replaced for an unrelated reason.

Glaser's Bake Shop served First Avenue for 116 years
Glaser's Bake Shop opened at 1670 First Avenue in 1902. Its founders, John and Justine Glaser, were Bavarian immigrants, and the family owned the building and lived above the shop for generations. The bakery closed in July 2018, after 116 years in Yorkville.
