The holiday is behind us and the neighborhood shifts into school gear — Thursday is the first day. On the avenues the churn keeps its own calendar: a bakery goes dark near 88th, one new studio switches its lights on east of Third, and another opens its booking book. Plus a corrections note we owe from the weekend. Here's your Tuesday.

Patis goes dark on Lexington again — and the fuller story is the chain's bankruptcy
Patis Bakery's shop at 1311 Lexington Avenue, between 88th and 89th — a shade west of our usual Third Avenue line, but on a stretch every Yorkville stroller knows — has closed for the second time in two years, Upper East Site reports, framing it as fallout from competition with Fellini Coffee, which Patch tracked opening earlier this year at 1335 Lexington near 89th. The public record suggests a bigger force than the espresso bar up the avenue: Patis — the kosher bakery chain JTA called New York's largest — filed for bankruptcy protection in June 2024 and has been shedding city locations since, including Times Square that summer (via JTA) and a Financial District shop this past April (via YeahThatsKosher). Whatever tipped this outpost, the pattern is chain-wide.

The afterschool question hanging over Yorkville East as the year begins
When classes start Thursday, one back-to-school question from the spring is still echoing: the city's DYCD re-bid dropped Manhattan Youth from afterschool programs at a dozen middle schools citywide (via Tribeca Citizen) — Yorkville East Middle School (MS 177) among them, per UESRPT and Patch — prompting a parent petition New York Family put at roughly 5,000 signatures and a letter from Council Speaker Julie Menin and Council Member Virginia Maloney demanding transparency from the agency. Families rallied to save the programs through late spring (via Patch). We could not confirm by press time which provider families will meet this week — worth asking at pickup.

SotoMethod switches on at 206 East 86th
The cardio-and-resistance interval studio SotoMethod has opened its second New York location at 206 East 86th Street, between Second and Third — squarely in Yorkville's fitness corridor (via Upper East Site, with Athletech News and East Side Feed corroborating the arrival).

Pure Barre plants a fourth UES flag at First and 90th
Pure Barre's studio at 1728 First Avenue, between 89th and 90th, is now live on the brand's own site as "NYC - 90th & First Ave," with class booking open — its fourth Upper East Side location, per East Side Feed, which tracked the announcement late last year. The company hasn't publicized an opening-day date.

The Papaya King corner's next act is nearly dressed
Maison171, the 17-story, 210-foot condo rising at 171 East 86th Street on the old Papaya King corner at Third Avenue, is nearing exterior completion, New York YIMBY reported in August. The tower is designed by SOM for developer ZD Jasper, with interiors branded by the fashion house Elie Saab; CityRealty pegs the sales timeline at 2027. Papaya King, which served that corner from 1932 until 2023, now trades from across the street at 206B East 86th — and its old corner comes back as condos over new ground-floor retail.

Corrections
For the record: same-morning fixes from the weekend's editions
Two weekend editions were corrected after publication, and our bar says those fixes are owed a note even when they land the same morning. Sunday's edition (#27), as first published, described Othership and LaserAway as a block apart when the two share the same East 86th Street blockfront, and mis-stated Asphalt Green's address, which is the East 90th Street campus. Monday's edition (#28), as first published, presented a Comptroller school-bus audit from December 2025 as new, said parking meters remain in effect on Labor Day when the city suspends them on major legal holidays, and listed an East Village location for MYKA that no source shows. All were fixed in the published editions the same morning by our standards desk.

Gracie Square Art Show returns to East End Avenue this weekend
The annual juried outdoor art fair runs Saturday and Sunday, September 12–13, 10am–5pm along East End Avenue at Carl Schurz Park — roughly 100 artists, kids' drawing and painting workshops in the Catbird Playground both mornings, and proceeds funding park restoration, per the Conservancy's calendar. It goes on rain or shine, per the Conservancy. Free, and very strollable.

Yorkville, Remembered
The Yorkville parish built for German speakers still holds a German Mass
St. Joseph's Church at 404 East 87th Street traces to 1873, when German-speaking residents of Yorkville asked the Jesuits of St. Lawrence O'Toole Church to find them a German-speaking priest; Father Joseph Durthaller became the new parish's first pastor. The current church building went up in 1894-95, designed by architect William Schickel in the Romanesque Revival style, and its stained-glass windows still bear inscriptions naming the German-American parishioners whose donations paid for it. More than 150 years after its founding as a German national parish, St. Joseph's remains, per the Archdiocese, the only parish in the Archdiocese of New York with a regularly scheduled German-language Mass.

Upper East Site checked in this week on Carlow, the cat the firefighters of Engine 22/Ladder 13 on East 85th Street took in as an abandoned kitten fourteen years ago — still on door duty, greeting the school-run crowd, unbothered by sirens, and by now several ranks senior to most of the house.
