Ship of Fools, the old Second Avenue game-day bar, is eyeing a comeback

Ship of Fools — the sports bar that spent years at 1590 Second Avenue, known, per Upper East Site, for its late-night bites and packed game-day crowds — is eyeing a return to the neighborhood, with the outlet's Tuesday preview placing the planned comeback in Lenox Hill. Details are thin so far: no address or opening date has been published. What Now New York has separately reported a planned Ship of Fools relaunch at 867 Ninth Avenue in Hell's Kitchen, with a liquor-license filing from owners Glenn and Owen Treacher; how the two plans relate isn't clear from the coverage. We'll keep watching.

Listing of note: an 1899 townhouse with its own garage on East 84th

This week's listing of note is 432 East 84th Street, on the block between First and York Avenues: a 25-foot-wide, four-story townhouse dating to 1899, roughly 5,250 square feet inside, with that rarest of Manhattan townhouse amenities — a private garage. The ask is $7.2 million, per listing brokerage Leslie J. Garfield's own page, which frames the layout as flexible, with four to five bedrooms; aggregator listings vary on the count and one carries a lower price, so the figures here are the brokerage's. Building and transaction only, as always.

The city's rat-killing machine comes to East 88th Street

A follow-up to the rat story we covered September 19: Upper East Site reports that the city has deployed a rat-killing machine to the East 88th Street block near First Avenue whose neighbors had gone public, in the outlet's earlier report, over an infestation that left the block 'overwhelmed.' The response came 'with a few exceptions,' per the outlet — including, per its headline, the city also discarded food waste in the street. Upper East Site has the details.

SHSAT takers get a school-day sitting November 18

A new date for the application-season calendar: the school-day SHSAT falls on Wednesday, November 18, per the DOE's posted fall 2027 admissions timeline — that sitting applies to students at public middle schools ending in eighth grade. As we noted Monday, the high school application, SHSAT registration and LaGuardia applications all open next Tuesday, October 6; registration closes Friday, October 30, and offers land March 3. If your eighth grader is testing, that October 30 registration deadline is the one to put on the refrigerator now — and confirm the details on the DOE's page, since dates sometimes move.

Check before you go: Friday's stargazing may be off

An update on the free telescope night we flagged in yesterday's paper: the Amateur Astronomers Association's event page for its Carl Schurz Park session is currently headed 'CANCELLED.' Whether that refers to Friday, October 2 or to a rained-out earlier session isn't clear from the page title alone — this session lists a Saturday rain date — so if you were planning on a night at the John Finley Walk esplanade, check the club's calendar at aaa.org before heading out. We've flagged it on our events page too.

Corrections

For the record: Jean Claude's old home

Yesterday's edition (#47), as first published — it was live on the site and in the day's social captions for a few minutes on Tuesday morning — said in its headline and intro that the French bistro Jean Claude was 'back on York Avenue,' and closed the item with 'Consider York Avenue's bistro count restored,' wording that implied the bistro had previously operated on York. It had not: Jean Claude's prior Upper East Side home was on Second Avenue at 71st Street, and it has reopened at 1481 York Avenue, between 78th and 79th Streets. The wording was fixed in a same-morning update and the day's social cards were regenerated.

Yorkville, Remembered

The brewery at East 92nd Street drew about a million gallons a day from the river

George Ehret founded the Hell Gate Brewery in 1866 on the blocks between East 92nd and 93rd Streets, Second to Third Avenues, naming it for the treacherous East River channel just off Yorkville. Per Click Americana, the brewery drilled its own well for fresh water and also drew about a million gallons of East River water a day, and by 1900 it was producing upwards of 600,000 barrels of beer a year. The Ruppert brewery opened a year later across the street, making this corner of Yorkville a two-brewery neighborhood.

The last day of September, and the calendar already belongs to October — fairs, festivals, deadlines, and at least one townhouse with a garage. We'll walk you through it one morning at a time. See you tomorrow.
