Yorkville, Remembered
The East 83rd Street church that passed from Lutherans to Slovak Catholics
The church at 211-213 East 83rd Street was built in the early 1890s for a German congregation, the Second Immanuel German Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1917 the Slovak Catholic parish of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, founded by Slovak immigrants on the Lower East Side in 1891, moved into the building, a handoff that traced Yorkville's shifting immigrant map. In 1980 it was designated the church for New York's Deaf Catholics. The parish has since moved out, and the building is being demolished for a planned condominium; New York YIMBY reported in February that its front had already been razed.
