A Hungarian cultural house, with a restaurant downstairs, is planned for an Upper East Side townhouse
The Tulipán Foundation plans to open a headquarters of nearly 6,000 square feet in a restored 1890s townhouse on the Upper East Side, with a Hungarian-inspired restaurant on the ground floor serving traditional dishes and cocktails. The team has applied for a liquor license. A second-floor marketplace would show work by Hungarian designers and artisans, and the upper floors would host artist and chef residencies. The foundation was set up in memory of Réka Darida and has supported artists in the U.S. and Hungary for five years. The target opening is spring 2027. Upper East Site lists Tulipán Kitchen among six new establishments coming to the Upper East Side. Neither report gives an address. Via Upper East Site and What Now New York.

Yorkville, Remembered
St. Monica's on East 79th Street, a church from the early 1900s
The Church of St. Monica at 413 East 79th Street dates to a parish founded in 1879 to serve Yorkville's largely Irish-American families. Its first pastor, James J. Dougherty, said Mass above a feed store at 404 East 78th Street starting in 1880, and he bought land for a church and school the next year. The present Gothic Revival church, designed by Schickel & Ditmars, was finished around 1905-06 (sources differ on the year), and its East 79th Street front looks almost as it did then. The parish school ran from 1881 to 1974. In 2015 the parish merged with St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Stephen of Hungary. The church still stands and holds services as an active parish.

A three-day weekend is coming. If the kids need a project Monday, a walk down East 79th to look up at an old church front counts as a field trip. See you tomorrow.
