Good morning, and happy Friday. It's a long weekend: there's no school Monday, and alternate-side parking is off for the holiday, though the meters aren't. Also in the paper: private-school application deadlines, the Sunday market on Second Avenue, a nurses' picket at Gracie Square Hospital, and the Turn Hall that once stood at Lexington and 85th.

Monday's holiday: alternate-side parking is suspended, but the meters still run
Alternate-side parking rules are suspended Monday, Oct. 12, which the city's 2026 parking calendar lists as a holiday. Meters stay in effect, along with all other posted rules; the DOT suspends meters only on a handful of major legal holidays, and this isn't one of them. The Sanitation Department had not posted its 2026 holiday collection notice when we went to press. Last year it skipped Monday pickup for the same holiday, so check nyc.gov/sanitation or 311 before putting bags out Sunday night. Via NYC DOT and DSNY.

Private-school applications for fall 2027: Allen-Stevenson's are due Dec. 1
For families in the private-school process, one nearby calendar: Allen-Stevenson, the boys' school on East 78th Street, opened applications for the 2027-28 year on Aug. 27 and lists them as due Dec. 1. Its page gives Dec. 9 for early notification of sibling and legacy applicants, Feb. 4, 2027, for kindergarten decisions and Feb. 10, 2027, for grades 1 through 8, under the policies of ISAAGNY, the independent schools' admissions association. Boys must turn 5 by Sept. 1, 2027, to start kindergarten. Other schools set their own deadlines, so check each one. Via The Allen-Stevenson School.

Yorkville, Remembered
The Turn Hall at Lexington and 85th, where Yorkville's German gymnasts trained
The New York Turn Verein, a German gymnastics and social club, bought property at Lexington Avenue and East 85th Street in 1897. It dedicated a four-story hall there on Nov. 30, 1898, according to Brownstoner. The building had bowling alleys downstairs, classrooms and meeting rooms, a ballroom with a stage, and a gymnasium on the top floor. Hans Jaeger's restaurant rented the ground floor. The hall is gone: it was sold to developers, and it was demolished in 1984.
