Good morning. It's a short paper today, and most of it is about the calendar. Middle-school applications open tomorrow, and Sunday is a full one: the Lexington Avenue festival returns after the storm postponed it, and Carl Schurz Park has pumpkins in the afternoon and a costume gathering for dogs.

Middle-school applications for fall 2027 open tomorrow
For families of current fifth graders: the public middle-school application opens Wednesday, Oct. 14, on MySchools, and closes Friday, Dec. 11, according to the Department of Education's fall 2027 timeline. Offers come out April 7, 2027. The department says those dates can change and that it will tell families directly if they do. Eighth-grade families have a nearer date: SHSAT registration closes Friday, Oct. 30, per the department's high-school admissions page. Via NYC Public Schools.

Our Lady of Good Counsel, the marble church on East 90th Street
The Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel at 230 East 90th Street was completed in 1892 for a parish founded in 1886. Thomas H. Poole designed it, and it is clad in Vermont marble; The New York Times called the style 'thirteenth century English Gothic.' The church is still open. In 2015 the parish merged with St. Thomas More, and Good Counsel became the parish church.
