In Lenox Hill, three construction projects side by side, and the neighbors have had enough

Neighbors in Lenox Hill say they are fed up with noise from three adjacent construction projects running at the same time, Upper East Site reports. It's south of our patch, but anyone living next to a scaffold on a Yorkville side street will recognize the complaint. Via Upper East Site.

This Week

The long weekend in one line: Halloween, the Marathon, clocks back, and Election Day

Asphalt Screams is Friday and Halloween is Saturday. Clocks fall back an hour early Sunday morning, the same day the Marathon comes up First Avenue and early voting ends. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, and alternate side parking is suspended that day (meters still run, per 311). Times, the First Avenue no-parking notice and the early-voting details are on our events page.

Yorkville, Remembered

Yorkville's tenements came after the 1879 law, with a window in every room

Most of Yorkville's tenement blocks went up after the Tenement Law of 1879, which made them newer than the Lower East Side's older stock and required a window in every room. In practice the 'Old Law' produced 'dumbbell' tenements whose windows often faced narrow airshafts that filled with garbage. The 1901 law answered with a requirement for courtyards to let in air.

Sunday hands everyone an extra hour. Spend it on the curb along First Avenue, or asleep. Both are defensible. Enjoy your Thursday.
