Yorkville, Remembered

Yorkville's Steinway piano makers rode the "Piano Ferry" from East 92nd Street

Many of the skilled German craftsmen who built Steinway pianos lived in Yorkville. To reach the Steinway factory across the river in Astoria, they commuted on the ferry from East 92nd Street. Its official name was the Steinway Ferry, but the neighborhood called it the "Piano Ferry." The 92nd Street slip is long gone. Today the NYC Ferry's Astoria route stops two blocks south, at East 90th Street.
